Drawing Machine 21 | Pen plotter art w/ AxiDraw (Creative coding)
This pen plotter drawing is made with Processing, Adobe Illustrator and AxiDraw V3/A3 drawing machine (not the NextDraw). In Processing, I have made field of beziers with a regular sine wave, in Adobe Illustrator I added the bloat effect.
Pen plotter drawings have a unique quality that no algorithm can recreate - it's the interaction of the pen with the surface of the paper that creates unique and unexpected outcomes.

How much time taken for a page of writing?
What do you recommend between the H A3 and the A1 for an enthusiast? The larger format seems to open up more possibilities, but its larger footprint has me concerned too
What program are you using to write the code in?
Thank you for the great reviews! I'm thinking of buying iDraw A1, but I worry about accuracy. In your video the horizontal glitches reveal during the drawing, do you have an idea why do they appear? Is axidraw a1 more accurate?
The glitches come from the paper. Its plotter paper and I think also the pens had some issues because I ran it at full speed. Otherwise I don’t have any problems with the iDraw a1.
Hey ! Why always using axidraw and not Idraw H which seems to be a better machine in terms of speed and similar in precision ?
Hi! No particular reason, recently I had to do work for a plotter work for an exhibition. The curators use the AxiDraw and all artists works had to be calibrated for it. At the same time I recorded these videos. Just took me time to do the video editing and posting. Otherwise, the performance is similar to iDraw. Speed and precision is similar. IDraw has a much better pen holder plate with a stepper motor, overall the motors are more quiet. Actually, the iDraw is better, especially the strokes are clearer because of more pressure from the pen holder plate. In the review videos I replied to some people who asked similar questions. That said, this is the AxiDraw, I don’t have any experience with the NextDraw.

May I ask how the drawing file was created??
I wrote an algorithm and added a few lines of code to change the stroke weight into lines for the plotter. I shall make a short tutorial for patrons and members here.
nice job!! What pen and paper are you using?
It’s a typical photocopy paper and an ink pen by a Korean company: Monami Plus Pen 3000. Just cheap to test the plotter and drawing. Otherwise I use better paper and ink pens.
That is one insanely noisy machine! The one I designed and built myself with an arduino, cnc shield and nema 17 steppers is practically silent compared to this thing, and also probably cost a fraction of this machine. I'm really happy I decided to build my own.
can you share the tutorial for the build?
It’s not a silent machine indeed but to be fair, the microphone of the camera is close and the volume appears louder. The setting in this recording was at 70% speed. At lower speeds, for example 10-30%, the sound is even louder. :)
looks like a picture of an elephants foot print. This is so cool.
Haha, indeed, an elephant walked across the canvas.
@@thedotisblack LOL It just looks like an elephant's footprint in soft African soil. You always make something really special and unique.
Amazing. I love it
Thank you!
this is fantastic. i love the black dots on the side and how they interact with the piece. after watching the center figure grow, when you focus on a dot, you can see the phantom of the pattern.
Glad you like it! Thank you!

hi, how do you make your own basement for this device? Also, is the iDraw 2.0 really that much better than the iDraw 1.0?
Hi! This basement comes with the iDraw, you need to select the option when you purchase it. But you can also get it without and plot directly on your desk. However, I find the basement extremely useful, the plotter becomes a plug&play device and because the basement is screwed to the frame, the plotter is always precise at high speeds. If there is a need, you also can remove the basement. Yes, the iDraw 2.0 is much better than 1.0! Day and night difference. 2.0 has a much better frame, doesn’t bend. 1.0 has metal rods that bend with additional weight and when extended. 2.0 has higher speeds, and the pen holder plate has a stepper motor which is faster for plotting. Also, 2.0 can hold a laser module. 1.0 cannot. The question is rather whether iDraw H is better than iDraw 2.0.
@@thedotisblack thx for the response and the code saved me a bunch, do you know where I can possibly get a feeder that is already made to possibly attach to this device? Also, I plan on just using it for the "handwriting" of 5x5 index cards so where did you locate the hershey fonts?
@@thedotisblack hey again, I got it and it's just like you said. Just wondering if you know how to simply write on a postcard then scan it in Inkscape and have the plotter write it out? Tried asking Uunatek but they don't seem to understand what I want to use it for. Any help would be appreciated.
Have you tried the Vector to Gcode 2 application ? I would love to hear your opinion .
Hi! I am sorry, I did not use the application, perhaps I should try it but did don’t have a need yet. Is there anything special about Vector to Gcode that you’d like to know?
@@thedotisblack First let me tell you that I really like your work/plots. With Vector to Gcode 2 is super intuitive. You can preview your path, add custom commands in specific places of the path , add interval commands every X amount of steps , set variable Z heights depending on the line width, custom commands per svg .... Super powerful and easy to use
@diegomonzon thanks for elaborating! The app sounds very useful, especially for optimizing paths and using brushes for acrylics instead of ink pens. I’ll give it a try!
@@thedotisblack with the iDraw can you use directly Gcode or do you have to use Inkscape with plugins?
The iDraw works same as the AxiDraw, with the plug-in in Inkscape and GRBL. Gcode is no problem. It’s just saw your message on Instagram. I’ll reply but first I need to watch your tutorial videos, especially the one that shows how to plot directly from Illustrator. Lots of people will be interested in it!
That’s a rip off. If I were you. I’d build my own the hardest part would be ordering everything online. You will learn a new skill that will allow you to upgrade later on. I would never suggest this for viewers. UA-cam has turned into a free for all.
Playing with rings... This one I have to redo completely because the rings are sort of doubled and the lines are too thick. Made with iDraw H. Can the iDraw paint with a brush like the axiDraw?
Sure, instead of a pen, you can use a brush. It’s a just a pen holder plate. But just like with any pen plotter, you will need to develop a method how to make the brush move between the canvas and paint. However, I’d recommend the iDraw 2.0 or iDraw H.
What pen 🖊️ are you using?
It’s a Monami pen. South Korean brand.

It's crazy how fucking greedy these manufacturers are, you can literally buy a pimped out 3D printer for the same price as a plotter (Bantam Tools the new owner of EMS is without joke made up of )ews) . They're charging hundreds of dollars for components you could get for under 50 bux on Ali, and the firmware is forked from an open source project, so are the tools. What exactly am I paying bux deluxe for? They couldn't even include a base for stability, you have to use your damn desk 🤦♂
Well, Bantam bought an established brand and want to see an instant return of their investment. Also, many people are simply not capable of building their own plotter and simply prefer a reliable machine. But here is a reply from Bantam to one of my comments on Reddit regarding the price: www.reddit.com/r/PlotterArt/s/eCArtHn7YF
can i seen the code ?
Hello dear, hope are you doing well. Can you please tell me what is the software you use to convert the image to a bitmap or vector. Thanks
I don’t convert, this graphic is made with Illustrator. But you can do it in any vector editing application. Converting images into vectors, you’ll need ti find some online sources or write your own algorithms.

Thank you! What do you think about an iDraw A0 plotter?
The A0 plotter looks great. I did not test it, but apart of the additional cable rail on the y-axis, everything supposed to be the same as A1. The frame is stable enough for the size. For me personally, A0 is too large though, I don’t have that much space in my studio.
Hi I'd like to buy one please assist
One of the machine or the drawing itself?
Its great brother ❤
Most people are too lazy and obtuse to appreciate this-far better for me and the rest of us who see the value.

Un Sueño hecho Realidad 😊😊
Hey what’s your email? I have some questions
Long Focus are can cut acrylic clean or transparant 1.5mm?
How long did that take
I think I mentioned it in the video, about 3.5 hours. I did as fast as possible, hence the nice granular strokes that emerge on the paper.
@@thedotisblack sorry I didn’t have my sound on
Where do you find the files
I do everything myself. And sometimes share the be files with my patrons and members.
@@thedotisblackoh
It is very interesting but it would be absolutley marvelous if they had an automatic tool changer.
I totally agree! That would enable many opportunities.
What marker is this?
It’s a Korean supplier, very common markers: Monami Oil Magic Ink.
where do i get a laser module? is it only for that plotter? I have the axidraw v3, i hope i didnt buy the wrong one
If you go to the website, you have several options to select from for this plotter, including the laser module. The laser modules work only with the iDraw models 2.0, H, A2, A1 and A0. These models have strong frames to hold the additional weight and the microcontrollers have the necessary plug for a laser module, including additional power adapter. The AxiDraw platform is not made for laser modules unfortunately.
Dreadful! The pen bending means an inaccuracy in repeatability of at least 1mm!
I’ve seen several of your negative comments. Can you please describe your problem in detail?
_"Drawing machine"_ a *plotter^* it is.
Hi David, thank you for the review, amazingly good and detailed. I work a lot with pitt natural charcoal pencil (like faber-castell #117400) I was wondering if it is possible to use these pencils, or do you think the tip will break off quickly ? Was wondering if it is feasible, as one might need to stop the plotter a lot of times to sharpen the pencil ?
Thank you for your feedback. Using charcoal pencils is possible, but you can’t use them inclined and they must have a certain thickness otherwise they’ll break from the movement. Of course you’ll need to sharpen them constantly. Or “invent” a loader for the pencil. For example, a small tube (ball pointer) with a spring on the other side that will press the pencil carriage down. This however will need a continuous line. It’s a little complicated and would require some work. Probably the best way to do it is simply dividing the drawing into segments and sharpen the pencil ones in a while.
@@thedotisblack thank you so much for replying and sharing your thoughts. Deeply appreciate your time and effort.

Are there no continuous ink pen solutions, bit like the Epson Ecotank in their inkjet printers?
Unfortunately not. You can find some larger ink cartridges for ink pens, but that’s also limited. Usually, as part of the process, the artists develop their own drawing tools or divide the drawing into several sequences.
Very good! May I ask if I can write in German or French by handwriting fonts?
Sure, you can use various languages. You need to first write your text and then use the plug-in Hershey text to transform your writing into a single font type. Just a few mouse clicks only.
What's the rod length of this a3 size plotter
I can’t measure it right now but it’s a bit larger than the size of the A3 page. Y-axis ~50cm, x-axis ~37cm. Keep in mind, if fully extended (A3), the x-axis is wobbly. For A4 it’s fine though. I talked about it in the review. Hence, I’d recommend the iDraw 2.0 or H.
The point is red and blue now... 😂
It always was and is. :))
